Fun with reflectors

August 24, 2016

Hello there,

I have had the good fortune to come into the proprietorship of one 5 way reflector. All of a sudden it became clear how those AMAZING family photos happen outside. The ones with faces that pop.

Reflectors.

If you are unsure about what a reflector is, here is a photo of my 3 yr old holding mine up. This one has a gold side, a silver side, a white side a black side and a translucent white side for diffusing flash. Its rather good.

This one is big enough for working outside with, without being too big to cart around - precisely what I will need for weddings. I am yet to use it a significant amount, but I did get to play with it while we were away.

The below photo shows my youngest with the reflector tucked up just out of view of the camera with its gold side facing up. The area I shot in was under the canopy of trees and pretty dark. This is the result:

This time I am using the white reflector (which you can almost see reflected in her eyes). Again shes well lit in the natural light.

This was the location of the above two photos, I lightened the exposure of this one so you could see the colour of the trees (you can tell as the sky is white and not blue) but you can see by the shadows that the light is patchy at best.

This time with the silver side, it almost washed her features out it was so bright. It would have been more effective further away.

Anyway, stay tuned to see some awesome portraits coming soon!!
